What's the difference between PolyPro and water-activated (gummed) tape?
PolyPro is workhorse polypropylene packing tape printed with up to 3 ink colors — best for high-volume shipping where you want your logo on every box. Water-activated tape — also called custom gummed tape — is gummed kraft (default) or white stock that bonds permanently to the carton for a premium unboxing moment, and it prints in full color — any design, any colors, with no color count to pick. It starts at a single roll, so it suits makers and product launches as well as enterprise shippers.
Does water-activated tape really need water?
Yes — that is how it works. The gummed adhesive stays inert until it gets wet, then it bonds into the corrugate permanently. You wet it with a tape dispenser, a sponge, or a damp cloth. If you don't want to add water to your packing station, order the printed poly tape instead: it peels and sticks straight off the roll.
What's the minimum order?
PolyPro starts at 36 rolls (~$250). Water-activated gummed tape has no minimum at all — a single 375 ft roll is $29.00.
How wide is the tape and how much weight can it hold?
Custom water-activated tape is 3" wide and comes in three grades — General Purpose (up to 30 lb), Heavy Duty (30–60 lb) and Industrial (50–90 lb). It bonds permanently to a corrugated box, so it is tamper-evident, and it needs a water-activated dispenser to wet the adhesive before it will stick. For high-volume parcel shipping on a standard tape gun, our PolyPro custom tape is the right choice.
How long does production take?
PolyPro custom tape ships in approximately 3-4 weeks after proof approval. Water-activated tape ships in one week or faster after proof approval. Both custom tapes include a free 12-hour digital proof — you'll see your artwork before anything goes to press.
Can I upload my own artwork?
Yes. Upload your logo or artwork directly on the product page after selecting your quantity. We accept PNG, JPG, SVG, PDF, AI, PSD, and EPS files up to 20 MB. Custom water-activated tape is printed in the USA. Custom poly tape is printed in North America at our sister facility. Stocked TapeDudes-branded supplies (gaffer, packing, kraft, masking, tamper-evident, stretch film, dispensers) are made in the USA.
